Brightwood-Lincoln Elementary School

Springfield, MA

A consolidation of two small schools with buildings inadequate for modern learning programs, plus PK and the district-wide ILP Program, the new facility creates an atmosphere of a small school feel for 960 students while ensuring universal access for all. 21st Century Learning and PBL spaces are integrated throughout the new school. The resulting building operates as separate schools sharing communal spaces such as a gymnasium, cafetorium, library, and art area, and allow for future expansion when needed.

Although the large building presented added complexity, such as traffic mitigation for two schools in the same location, through careful educational programming for efficient adjacencies and site analysis that maximized efficiency, these issues were addressed. The underserved community has been energized by this modern facility that will now serve the needs of two districts for the foreseeable future.
