Lafayette Road Bridge
Lynch submitted the lowest competitive bid for this project which consisted of the rehabilitation of Bridge No. 078101, which carries Colonel Rodman Highway, RI Route 4 over Lafayette Road in North Kingstown. The existing superstructure was replaced and the substructure was repaired as required. A crossover was utilized during construction with the project limits extending along Route 4 from approximately 800’ north of Bridge No. 078101, at the existing Route 4 over the Railroad Bridge, to approximately 1000’ south of Bridge No. 078101.
The limits along Lafayette Road are approximately 150’ east and west of Bridge No. 078101. The Lynch Team performed investigative work to coordinate the design and installation of the temporary foundations and supports for the new superstructures. The superstructures were conventionally built in the temporary location while a center median crossover was paved on Route 4. After an extensive planning phase, the spans were slid into place during two weekend crossovers in the fall of 2019.
The weekend shutdowns occurred during a 56-hour period beginning on Friday night, with traffic required to be fully open by the Monday morning commute. Multiple vendors and specialty subcontractors were coordinated for this effort, including demolition, precast concrete supply and installation, bridge slide, traffic control, and civil support. Both weekends were successfully completed ahead of schedule.
This project also included pavement resurfacing including micromilling, pavement overlay, saw cutting bituminous pavement, removing and disposing flexible pavement, furnishing and installing pavement markings, adjusting existing drainage structures, cleaning existing drainage structures and pipes, removing paved waterways, constructing riprap waterways, grass swales, and check dams, disposing signs, furnishing and installing signs, installing new guardrail and end treatments, cleaning and sweeping pavement, loaming and seeding, maintenance and protection of traffic, and all other incidentals necessary to complete the project. Causes of Contract Value Adjustments Increase in contract value is due to Lynch realizing the maximum incentive for early completion ($150,000), as well as quantity adjustments to match field conditions.
