J.H. Lynch & Sons, Inc. (JHL) was contracted by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to perform repairs to the Wyoming Upper Reservoir Dam in Richmond/Hopkinton, RI. The Wyoming Upper Reservoir Dam impounds water from the Wood River creating a pond which is used for public recreation. As a part of the rehabilitation, the project’s purpose is to repair the dam and return it to “Not Unsafe” status.
To accomplish this, phased construction utilizing cofferdams were used. Within Phase 1, water was diverted of the primary spillway while repairs to the sluiceway, center embankment and spillway were made. These improvements included masonry repairs, installation of sluiceway gates, and a new cast in place concrete spillway. Upon completion of Phase 1, the water controls will be relocated to Phase 2.
A planned drawdown of the pond will take place and flow will be controlled through the new sluiceway and, if necessary, over the repaired portion of the Phase 1 spillway. Right embankment improvements will then take place including the construction of a new low-level outlet.
Once all site improvements are made, unsuitable materials will be tested for contaminates and properly disposed of, erosion controls removed, and site will be restored to pre-existing conditions.
