Grave of British Soldier on Monument Street

The British “Light Company of the 4th Foot” was involved in a skirmish near North Bridge during the retreat from Concord on April 19, 1775. At least three privates were killed. Two of them were buried at the bridge, while one died from his wounds later. That third individual was buried near what is now known as Monument Street.

On Remembrance Sunday, 2000, a marker was placed in a formal ceremony including representatives from the United Kingdom. The inscription on the marker reads:

19 APRIL 1775
NEAR THIS SITE WAS BURIED
A BRITISH SOLDIER OF THE
4th. THE KING'S OWN REGt. OF FOOT,
FATALLY WOUNDED AT NORTH BRIDGE
