Battle Road Trail

Lincoln, MA

The grave site at Folly Pond honors a soldier who was killed in Lincoln near the home of Captain William Smith on April 19, 1775. The details of the death are murky, but by some accounts the soldier was left in the care of the captain’s wife, Catherine, and died later. A 19th century account by historian Frank Coburn later claimed the remains of a British soldier, “were uncovered a few years ago when the road builders were widening and grading anew the highway.”

A stone with a bronze plaque placed by the National Park Service as part of the Battle Road Trail project in 2000 indicates the approximate location of the mystery soldier’s remains.
