Upper Common, Turnpike Road

A large boulder sits in the middle of Townsend's Upper Common marking the United States Bicentennial. The side facing Main Street is engraved:

1776
1976

On the opposite side is a small bronze plaque that reads:

THIS
LAND
GIVEN BY
GEORGE L. WHITCOMB

FRANCES J. ADAMS

IVA WORCESTER

In 2013, seventeen-year-old Dennis Murphy completed his Eagle Scout project at the site. He worked with the town and members of his troop to beautify the area and create a crushed stone path to access the monument from Turnpike Road.
