The monument located at Lexington’s “Bloody Bluff” marks a notable point along the retreat of British soldiers on April 19, 1775. Upon this steep formation of rocks, British soldiers laid down musket fire to cover their escape. They then made their way to nearby Fiske Hill, only to be routed again and pursued by angry colonials.

The monument’s text reads:

THIS BLUFF
WAS USED AS A RALLYING POINT
BY THE BRITISH
APRIL 19 1775.
AFTER A SHARP FIGHT
THEY RETREATED TO FISKE HILL
FROM WHICH THEY WERE DRIVEN
IN GREAT CONFUSION.
