{"id":1010,"date":"2024-10-22T19:58:15","date_gmt":"2024-10-22T19:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=1010"},"modified":"2024-11-13T20:04:25","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T20:04:25","slug":"paul-revere-capture-monument","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/paul-revere-capture-monument\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul Revere Capture Monument"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the American Revolution\u2019s most iconic stories is that of Paul Revere and his \u201cmidnight ride\u201d to warn of the British advance on <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/concord\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concord<\/a>. The Paul Revere Capture Monument marks the location where, on the night of April 18, 1775, Revere was apprehended by British officers, leaving fellow riders William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott to complete their mission without him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While today the Paul Revere Capture Monument has a prominent location along the Battle Road Trail in <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/place\/minute-man-national-historical-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minute Man National Historical Park<\/a>, its origins are humbler. In 1895, the Town of <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/lincoln\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lincoln<\/a> voted to appropriate $100.00 to erect a \u201csuitably inscribed monument\u201d near the site where Revere was captured.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">By 1899, a large monument of Quincy granite had been installed, with a bronze tablet set within a stone wall. The location was based on local tradition and the recommendations of a committee who reviewed both the terrain and the subtle changes in road alignment since Revere\u2019s fateful encounter with the British. The location was determined to be within a few yards of the actual site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As noted in the <em>Cultural Landscape Report for Battle Road Unit, Minute Man National Historical Park, Volume One<\/em>, the monument was originally sited facing the Battle Road and repositioned in 1956. In 1959, the Paul Revere Capture Site was incorporated into the newly formed Minute Man National Historical Park and in 2000, it was moved to its current location and reoriented to once again face toward the Battle Road Trail. The semi-circular stone wall enclosure and interpretive waysides were also installed at that time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The plaque\u2019s inscription tells the story of Paul Revere\u2019s capture:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">AT THIS POINT,<br \/>\nON THE OLD CONCORD ROAD AS IT THEN WAS,<br \/>\nENDED THE MIDNIGHT RIDE OF<br \/>\nPAUL REVERE.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">HE HAD, AT ABOUT TWO O&#8217;CLOCK OF THE MORNING<br \/>\nOF APRIL 19, 1775, THE NIGHT BEING CLEAR AND THE<br \/>\nMOON IN ITS THIRD QUARTER, GOT THUS FAR ON HIS<br \/>\nWAY FROM LEXINGTON TO CONCORD, ALARMING THE<br \/>\nINHABITANTS AS HE WENT, WHEN HE AND HIS<br \/>\nCOMPANIONS, WILLIAM DAWES, OF BOSTON, AND DR.<br \/>\nSAMUEL PRESCOTT, OF CONCORD, WERE SUDDENLY<br \/>\nHALTED BY A BRITISH PATROL, WHO HAD STATIONED<br \/>\nTHEMSELVES AT THIS BEND OF THE ROAD. DAWES,<br \/>\nTURNING BACK, MADE HIS ESCAPE. PRESCOTT,<br \/>\nCLEARING THE STONE WALL, AND FOLLOWING A PATH<br \/>\nKNOWN TO HIM THROUGH THE LOW GROUND, REGAINED<br \/>\nTHE HIGHWAY AT A POINT FURTHER ON, AND GAVE THE<br \/>\nALARM AT CONCORD. REVERE TRIED TO REACH THE<br \/>\nNEIGHBORING WOOD, BUT WAS INTERCEPTED BY<br \/>\nA PARTY OF OFFICERS ACCOMPANYING THE PATROL,<br \/>\nDETAINED AND KEPT IN ARREST. PRESENTLY<br \/>\nHE WAS CARRIED BY THE PATROL BACK<br \/>\nTO LEXINGTON.
