{"id":1041,"date":"2024-09-04T14:03:54","date_gmt":"2024-09-04T14:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=1041"},"modified":"2024-11-12T19:57:29","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T19:57:29","slug":"isaac-davis-stone","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/isaac-davis-stone\/","title":{"rendered":"Isaac Davis Stone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tradition holds that this stone once marked the spot where American Revolution hero Captain Isaac Davis was killed at the North Bridge during the fateful Battle of Concord.<\/p>\n<p>While no firsthand testimony or later nineteenth century accounts mention the stone, researcher Joel Bohy found a reference to the \u201crevolutionary relic\u201d in a now-missing deposition of David Buttrick. Buttrick\u2019s father worked on the removal and rebuilding of the North Bridge in the 1790s.<\/p>\n<p>The stone was rediscovered during further bridge reconstruction in the 1870s. It was moved to the nearby &#8220;Bullet Hole House&#8221; where it remained until the Town of <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/concord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concord<\/a> gifted the stone to the Town of <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/acton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acton<\/a> in 1900.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A plaque was purchased by the Town of Acton at a cost of $31.50 and affixed to the front of the stone. It reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ON THIS STONE<br \/>\nCAPTAIN ISAAC DAVIS<br \/>\nFELL AT THE HEAD OF THE ACTON<br \/>\nMINUTE MEN, PIERCED BY A BRITISH<br \/>\nMUSKET-BALL AT OLD NORTH BRIDGE<br \/>\nCONCORD APRIL 19, 1775<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">PRESENTED BY THE TOWN OF CONCORD TO THE TOWN OF ACTON<br \/>\nAPRIL 19, 1900<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tradition holds that this stone once marked the spot where American Revolution hero Captain Isaac Davis was killed at the North Bridge during the fateful Battle of Concord.
