{"id":1329,"date":"2024-10-23T19:41:24","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T19:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=1329"},"modified":"2024-11-11T18:37:14","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T18:37:14","slug":"minute-man-memorial","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/minute-man-memorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Minute Man Memorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bronze tablet set within a large boulder at Minute Man Park in <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/pepperell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pepperell<\/a> commemorates the local militia men who were summoned from this site to the opening battles of the American Revolution on April 19, 1775.<\/p>\n<p>Dedicated on July 26, 1926, the boulder was described in the article \u201cLarge Number Attend Dedication of Boulder,\u201d published in the following day\u2019s issue of the <em>Worcester Evening Gazette<\/em>, as \u201cthe old boulder of Revolutionary fame at the Page farm\u201d located in a field just off the main road. As the plaque succinctly recalls, it was from the top of this boulder that the, \u201celder Bancroft and his son rallied the sturdy farmers to repel the British at Concord and Lexington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The monument was erected in memory of Lucy Bancroft Page, a descendant of Benjamin Fletcher, a captain in the 7th Middlesex Regiment; Edmund Bancroft, a member of the Committee of Safety of Pepperell; Jonas Smith, a private in the militia; John Hoar, a Patriot who wrote an account of the Battle of <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/lexington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lexington<\/a>; and Leonard Hoar, who served several enlistments as a private in the Middlesex county militia.<\/p>\n<p>The inscription reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">FROM THIS BOULDER<br \/>\nTHE MINUTE MEN OF PEPPERELL<br \/>\nWERE CALLED TO JOIN<br \/>\nCOLONEL PRESCOTT AT GROTON<br \/>\nON APRIL 19, 1775<br \/>\nBY CAPTAIN EDMUND BANCROFT<br \/>\nAND HIS SON LUTHER<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">PLACED BY<br \/>\nGRACE E.
