{"id":1334,"date":"2024-10-23T21:13:25","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T21:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=1334"},"modified":"2024-11-11T19:15:23","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T19:15:23","slug":"prince-estabrook-memorial","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/prince-estabrook-memorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Prince Estabrook Memorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Widely celebrated as the first Black Patriot to fight in the American Revolution, Prince Estabrook took part in the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775. Although he was shot during the skirmish, Estabrook survived his wounds and went on to see combat yet again, just a few months later in July. He served a number of additional tours of duty as a militia man, then joined the Continental Army in 1780.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, Estabrook received manumission from Benjamin Estabrook, the <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/lexington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lexington<\/a> man to whom he had been enslaved. He later moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/ashby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashby<\/a> and lived with Benjamin\u2019s son, Nathaniel.<\/p>\n<p>Prince Estabrook died in 1830 and was buried in the pauper\u2019s section of Ashby\u2019s First Parish Burial Ground. One hundred years later his service was formally recognized during the Massachusetts Bay Colony Tercentenary with a <a href=\"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/prince-estabrook-grave-marker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simple grave marker<\/a> bearing his name and regiment.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, a memorial honoring Estabrook and the thousands of other African Americans who fought in the Revolutionary War was installed outside Lexington\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/place\/buckman-tavern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buckman Tavern<\/a>. Sited across from the <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/place\/lexington-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle Green<\/a>, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/lexington-revolutionary-war-monument\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first monument to the American Revolution<\/a> was erected in 1799, the Estabrook Memorial was made possible by local editor and newspaper reporter, Alice \u2018Mickey\u2019 Hinkle, who became interested in Estabrook following an interview she conducted with local living history presenter Charles H. Price.<\/p>\n<p>Unaware that Lexington\u2019s militia company had included an enslaved individual, Hinkle set out to uncover Estabrook\u2019s life story. Seven years later the book <em>Prince Estabrook: Slave and Solider<\/em> was published. Hinkle dedicated a portion of the proceeds to a fund to memorialize Estabrook at a prominent location within the community.<\/p>\n<p>The plaque reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In Honor of<br \/>\nPRINCE ESTABROOK<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Prince Estabrook was a slave who<br \/>\nlived in Lexington. At dawn on<br \/>\nApril, 19, 1775, he was one of the<br \/>\nLexington Minute Men awaiting the<br \/>\narrival of the British Regulars at the<br \/>\nBuckman Tavern. In the battle which<br \/>\nfollowed, Prince Estabrook was<br \/>\nwounded on Lexington Green.<br \/>\nThrough circumstances and destiny, he<br \/>\nthus became the first black soldier to<br \/>\nfight in the American Revolution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This monument is dedicated to the<br \/>\nmemory of Prince Estabrook and the<br \/>\nthousands of other courageous black<br \/>\npatriots long denied the recognition<br \/>\nthey deserve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Donated by the Alice M.
