{"id":1335,"date":"2024-10-24T12:44:21","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T12:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=1335"},"modified":"2024-11-08T13:14:14","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T13:14:14","slug":"american-revolution-soldiers-marker","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/american-revolution-soldiers-marker\/","title":{"rendered":"American Revolution Soldiers Marker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Memorial Day, 1999, the collaborative efforts of the Bedford Historical Society, the Bedford Minutemen, and the Bedford Public Works Department culminated in the dedication of an historical marker acknowledging the Revolutionary War heroes interred at the town\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/place\/bedfords-old-burying-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Burying Ground<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The street-facing plaque stands prominently by the cemetery\u2019s entrance on Springs Road. At the top of the marker is an embossed image of the \u201cBedford Flag.&#8221; Underneath the battle flag, three lines announce the marker\u2019s reason for being:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">OLD BURYING GROUND<br \/>\nFORTY THREE BEDFORD SOLDIERS OF THE<br \/>\nAMERICAN REVOLUTION<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">BEDFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY, MINUTEMEN, AND BEDFORD PUBLIC WORKS<br \/>\nMAY 31, 1999<\/p>\n<p>The names of the forty-three Patriots buried at the site are listed in two columns. The marker draws attention to three of the names with an asterisk: Caesar Jones, Cambridge Moore, and Caesar Prescott. As the plaque notes, these Patriots were former slaves. Jones, Moore, and Prescott were laid to rest in unmarked graves in the \u201cAfrican Reservation,\u201d a segregated section of the cemetery.
