Both were once residents of Monson (today part of Milford) who served in the American War of Independence.<\/p>\n<p>The marker notes the highlights of both men\u2019s storied lives:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">CAPTAIN JOSIAH CROSBY<br \/>\n(1730\u20131793)<br \/>\nLIEUTENANT THOMPSON MAXWELL<br \/>\n(1742\u20131832)<br \/>\nThese two Revolutionary soldiers were settlers<br \/>\nnear here in the town of Monson (afterward<br \/>\nAmherst, now Milford). Captain Crosby served<br \/>\nwith distinction at Bunker Hill and marched<br \/>\nin defense of Ticonderoga in 1777 and of<br \/>\nRhode Island in 1778. He also served Amherst<br \/>\nas moderator, selectman, and representative to<br \/>\nthe General Court. Lieutenant Maxwell had the<br \/>\nunusual record for a New Hampshire resident<br \/>\nof participating in the Boston Tea Party, Battle<br \/>\nof Lexington &#8211; Concord, and the Battle of Bunker<br \/>\nHill.
