{"id":1337,"date":"2024-10-24T13:14:57","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T13:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=1337"},"modified":"2024-11-11T19:53:51","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T19:53:51","slug":"the-foot-of-the-rocks","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/the-foot-of-the-rocks\/","title":{"rendered":"The Foot of the Rocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This historical marker, erected by the Arlington Bicentennial Planning Committee in 1978 and sited in a small triangular park at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Lowell Street, commemorates the colonial minute men and British soldiers who met in one of the bloodiest battles on the opening day of the Revolutionary War at the Foot of the Rocks.<\/p>\n<p>Here, British soldiers retreating from <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/concord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concord<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/lexington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lexington<\/a> were ambushed by colonial forces who lay in wait at the highest point along the road from Concord to Charlestown.<\/p>\n<p>The battle at the Foot of the Rocks launched a series of engagements between the British army and the colonial militia that lasted throughout the day until the regulars reached Charlestown around dusk. After the ambush, the British soldiers began attacking civilians and burning buildings, tactics that escalated the violence in and around Boston.<\/p>\n<p>A plaque marking the site of Foot of the Rocks reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">THE FOOT OF THE ROCKS<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">1635<br \/>\nMENOTOMY<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">1807<br \/>\nWEST CAMBRIDGE<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">1867<br \/>\nARLINGTON<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">THIS PARK IS DEDICATED BY THE PEOPLE OF ARLINGTON TO THE<br \/>\nMEMORY OF THE COLONIAL MINUTEMEN AND BRITISH SOLDIERS WHO MET<br \/>\nHERE IN THE FIRST GREAT BATTLE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">BRITISH TROOPS IN RETREAT FROM BLOODY FIRST SKIRMISHES AT<br \/>\nLEXINGTON AND CONCORD WERE HERE OPPOSED BY COLONIAL FORCES<br \/>\nGATHERING FROM COUNTIES AND THIRTY TOWNS. MORE MEN<br \/>\nFELL AT THE FOOT OF THE ROCKS AND ON THE PLAINS OF MENOTOMY<br \/>\nTHAN IN EVERY OTHER LOCALE THROUGH WHICH THE ADVERSARY FORCES<br \/>\nFOUGHT THAT LONG DAY, APRIL 19, 1775.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">THE VALOR OF ALL THOSE WHO FELL AND THOSE WHO FOUGHT ON,<br \/>\nCONSECRATED THE FOOT OF THE ROCKS IN 1775. WE DEDICATE<br \/>\nTHIS FIELD TO THEIR MEMORY SO THAT THEIR COURAGE WILL BE<br \/>\nREMEMBERED.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ARLINGTON BICENTENNIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE<br \/>\nAPRIL 19, 1978<\/p>\n<p>In October 2022, a master plan by Ray Dunetz Landscape Architecture commissioned by the Town of <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/arlington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arlington<\/a> was finalized with the goal of providing a new park setting to commemorate the battle site and history of the area.
