Upon receiving the alarm warning of the advance of British regulars, colonial militia and minute companies quickly gathered at the North Bridge in <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/concord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concord<\/a> and succeeded in driving the British back into Charlestown.<\/p>\n<p>Erected by the Town of Concord to replace a wooden sign from 1925, the Concord Fight Plaque features a bronze tablet mounted on an uncut granite boulder. Its inscription shares the same narrative that appeared on the original sign. The text, written by Concord resident and historian Allen French, recalls the events of April 19th and the noteworthy words and deeds of the Patriots who played key roles there.<\/p>\n<p>It reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">CONCORD FIGHT<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ON THE MORNING OF APRIL NINETEENTH, 1775, WHILE THE BRITISH<br \/>\nHELD THIS BRIDGE, THE MINUTE-MEN AND MILITIA OF CONCORD AND<br \/>\nNEIGHBORING TOWNS GATHERED ON THE HILL ACROSS THE RIVER.<br \/>\nTHERE THE CONCORD ADJUTANT, JOSEPH HOSMER, DEMANDED, \u201cWILL<br \/>\nYOU LET THEM BURN THE TOWN DOWN?\u201d THERE THE LINCOLN CAPTAIN,<br \/>\nWILLIAM SMITH, OFFERED TO DISLODGE THE BRITISH. THE ACTON<br \/>\nCAPTAIN, ISAAC DAVIS, SAID, \u201cI HAVEN\u2019T A MAN THAT\u2019S AFRAID TO GO!\u201d<br \/>\nAND THE CONCORD COLONEL, JAMES BARRETT ORDERED THE ATTACK<br \/>\nON THE REGULARS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">THE COLUMN WAS LED BY MAJOR JOHN BUTTRICK, MARCHING FROM<br \/>\nHIS OWN FARM. HIS AIDE WAS LT. COLONEL JOHN ROBINSON OF WESTFORD.<br \/>\nTHE MINUTE-MEN OF ACTON, CONCORD, LINCOLN AND BEDFORD FOLLOWED.<br \/>\nAFTER THEM CAME THE MILITIA. AT THE BRITISH VOLLEY ISAAC DAVIS<br \/>\nFELL. BUTTRICK CRIED, \u201cFIRE, FELLOW-SOLDIERS, FOR GOD\u2019S SAKE FIRE!\u201d<br \/>\nAND HIMSELF FIRED FIRST.
