{"id":1355,"date":"2024-10-25T14:05:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T14:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=1355"},"modified":"2024-11-11T17:38:05","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T17:38:05","slug":"john-raymond-memorial","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/john-raymond-memorial\/","title":{"rendered":"John Raymond Memorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This bronze plaque, placed in a stone outside <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/place\/munroe-tavern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Munroe Tavern<\/a>, honors John Raymond, a citizen of <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/lexington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lexington<\/a> who was killed at that location on April 19, 1775.<\/p>\n<p>While the drama of Raymond\u2019s death has been retold and embellished throughout the years, tavern owner William Munroe wrote that he, \u201cleft his house in the care of a lame man, by the name of Raymond,\u201d while British forces rested and recuperated there on April 19th. Munroe stated simply that, \u201cAfterward, when [Raymond] was leaving the house, he was shot by the regulars and found dead within a few rods of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The monument was erected by the Lexington Historical Society and dedicated on September 25, 2011, during the ceremony for the formal reopening of the Munroe Tavern after extensive refurbishment and reinterpretation.<\/p>\n<p>Its inscription reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">John Raymond<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">On April 19, 1775 the British Regulars occupied<br \/>\nMunroe Tavern during their retreat from Concord<br \/>\nthrough Lexington toward Boston. John Raymond,<br \/>\na member of Captain Parker&#8217;s Company, although<br \/>\nunarmed, was shot and killed as he attempted to<br \/>\nleave the tavern. He became the tenth citizen of<br \/>\nLexington to die at the hands of the Redcoats that<br \/>\nday, leaving behind his widow Rebecca and five<br \/>\nchildren under the age of twelve, the youngest not<br \/>\nquite two years of age.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This bronze plaque, placed in a stone outside Munroe Tavern, honors John Raymond, a citizen of Lexington who was killed at that location on April 19, 1775.
