Some of the officers were then sent to <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/pepperell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pepperell<\/a> \u201con parole\u201d and boarded with local families or houses.<\/p>\n<p>Sergeant Edmund Bancroft, for whom Pepperell\u2019s Bancroft Street is named, arranged for these paroled men to meet once a week \u201cfor friendly conference.\u201d The location where these conferences took place, on the corner of Townsend and Bancroft Streets, is today marked with a granite monument.<\/p>\n<p>Its inscription reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">AFTER THE SURRENDER OF<br \/>\nBURGOYNE AT SARATOGA, IN 1777,<br \/>\nCERTAIN BRITISH OFFICERS,<br \/>\nPRISONERS OF WAR QUARTERED<br \/>\nIN THIS VICINITY BUT RELEASED<br \/>\nUPON PAROLE, WERE PERMITTED<br \/>\nTO ENJOY, IN ALL THEIR MILITARY<br \/>\nFINERY, A \u201cTRYSTING PLACE\u201d<br \/>\nAT THIS SPOT.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After British General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga on October 17, 1777, several members of the British army were captured and brought to Cambridge.
