{"id":720,"date":"2024-08-16T09:38:43","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T09:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=720"},"modified":"2024-11-11T19:44:59","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T19:44:59","slug":"soldiers-john-fitch-monument","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/soldiers-john-fitch-monument\/","title":{"rendered":"Soldiers&#8217;\/John Fitch Monument"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Standing with quiet dignity on Ashby\u2019s town common is a simple granite obelisk dedicated to the Town\u2019s local soldiers who served in the country\u2019s early wars.<\/p>\n<p>Financed with a $100 donation by local philanthropist Lewis Gould, Esq., the monument originally served a dual purpose, commemorating John Fitch and the conflict that led to his capture by Native Americans in the mid-18th century as well as those who \u201cServed in the War of the Revolution.\u201d The soldiers were not mentioned by name.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 2018, local resident Henry Moulton, inspired by a visit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/stories\/bunker-hill-monument-dedication-2__trashed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bunker Hill Monument<\/a> in Charlestown, proposed adding the names of the five <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/ashby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashby<\/a> residents who had been killed during the Revolutionary War to the monument. His vision to locally acknowledge their sacrifice was realized on February 2, 2020.
