{"id":729,"date":"2024-08-16T09:59:48","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T09:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=729"},"modified":"2024-11-06T23:10:23","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T23:10:23","slug":"british-retreat-marker","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/british-retreat-marker\/","title":{"rendered":"British Retreat Marker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sited in a wall on Massachusetts Avenue in <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/lexington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lexington<\/a>, the British Retreat Marker records the fact that a British field piece was planted on the hill to the south and several buildings in the neighborhood were burned, as noted in the 1884 <em>Report of Lexington\u2019s Committee on Monuments and Markers<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to David Hackett Fischer in <em>Paul Revere\u2019s Ride<\/em> (1963), it was here that British forces, on their retreat from Concord\u2019s North Bridge, formed a line of battle and positioned their two six-pounder cannons nearby. While these cannons were uncomfortably close to their targets, Brigadier General Hugh Percy ordered them to be fired anyway. This successfully scattered the colonists and allowed the retreating British to reach safety.
