{"id":744,"date":"2024-08-16T10:46:22","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T10:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/?post_type=monuments&#038;p=744"},"modified":"2024-11-08T14:21:44","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T14:21:44","slug":"captain-isaac-davis-plaque","status":"publish","type":"monuments","link":"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/captain-isaac-davis-plaque\/","title":{"rendered":"Captain Isaac Davis Plaque"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In April 1975, the Isaac Davis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated a plaque to their namesake near the North Bridge in <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/concord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concord<\/a>. Captain Davis, who led a company of minute men from the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/communities\/acton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acton<\/a>, was killed during the first volley of British musket fire at the Concord Fight\u2014and consequently, he was the very first Patriot officer to be killed in the American Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Davis and the minute men in his command were distinguished for their fearless demeanor while they led the march as the Patriots\u2019 designated vanguard. Seeing the men advancing in double file, the opposing British forces advanced across the North Bridge to take up positions. Though no order to fire had been given, a single shot rang out from one of the British Regulars, followed by a confused volley from the rest of their line. Of the Patriot casualties, <a href=\"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/isaac-davis-tombstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Captain Davis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/s2.designcostaging.com\/clients\/mmm\/monuments\/abner-hosmer-tombstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Private Abner Hosmer<\/a>, both from Acton, were killed, and four others were injured.<\/p>\n<p>In its entirety, the plaque reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ON THE MORNING OF APRIL 19, 1775, APPROXIMATELY<br \/>\n400 COLONIALS STOOD ON THE HILL OVERLOOKING THE<br \/>\nNORTH BRIDGE. AS SMOKE ROSE FROM CONCORD CENTER,<br \/>\nTHE ORDER TO MARCH WAS GIVEN.
