Rare Disease<\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Wilson disease (WD) is a rare, serious and progressive genetic condition that affects approximately one in 30,000 people, or 11,400 people in the US.<\/strong><\/span> It is a heterogeneous, autosomal recessive disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the ATP7B gene, resulting in impaired biliary copper (Cu) excretion and impaired incorporation of Cu into ceruloplasmin, leading to progressive accumulation of Cu in the liver and brain. If untreated or inadequately treated, Cu accumulation results in hepatic, neurologic, and psychiatric symptoms, and may lead to premature death.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
