Bennet specializes in design, construction, environmental and land use law. Bennet advises leading design firms from around the country on a wide range of matters including contract formation and negotiations, ownership transitions, and dispute resolution.

Bennet brings broad experience to his environmental and land use work with private, public, and nonprofit clients. Much of Bennet’s work in this area is for public agencies, community development corporations, and renewable energy companies.

Bennet is active with the Boston Society for Architecture and currently serves as Chair of the BSA Foundation Board of Trustees.

Prior Professional Experience

General Counsel, Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs. Advised the Secretary of Environmental Affairs and directed the legal work of this cabinet-level office.

Principal Deputy General Counsel and Acting General Counsel, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.  Managed over thirty attorneys and worked on the broad range of legal and policy issues facing the agency, from the regulation of air quality, wetlands, and tidelands (Chapter 91) to contracts and employment disputes.

Director, Smart Growth Program & Senior Attorney, Conservation Law Foundation (1996-2004). Advocacy work focused on land use law, permitting, housing development and transportation issues.

Assistant Attorney General, Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Prosecuted environmental crimes and civil offenses.

Associate, Hale and Dorr (now WilmerHale), Washington, DC.  Environmental law and litigation.

Law Clerk, Judge Walter E. Black, Jr., United States District Court, Baltimore, Maryland.
