VUMC had one of the first federally-funded Clinical Research Centers in the country. Originally opened in 1961, the facility has maintained one of the most prestigious programs with little modification to their original space. B+MD was engaged to program, plan and design a new adaptable facility that had its own identity, accessible to inpatients and outpatients.
The programming phase involved a comprehensive utilization study to determine the number of inpatient and exam rooms and required flexibility within these rooms for the range of studies that would take place in the unit. Additionally, two of the inpatient rooms serve a dual-function as a Communicable Disease Response Unit designed to be separated from the rest of the CRC if a highly infectious patient is admitted to the hospital.
Reflective of the importance of this center’s contribution to the clinical research community, the new CRC location has an easily identifiable and accessible entrance directly off the main hospital plaza. The exterior design focused on obscuring views into the space, utilizing a custom glass-fin curtainwall system. Sitework including landscape design and retaining walls were used to enhance privacy and provide better views for the patients inside.
