As VUMC’s first off-campus wet-research laboratory facility, the Cool Springs Life Science Center (CSLSC) Drug Discovery Center provides 13,000 SF of collaborative new space for an expanding program with significant extramural funding and productive direct industry partnerships. An ideal candidate for an innovative project type, the new facility consists of the build‐out of 13,000 SF of shell space on the first level of an existing developer‐constructed science center, with 8,000 SF of wet lab space, an NMR, offices, a conference room, break area, and additional ancillary spaces.

The lab is comprised of modular casework with approximately 32 fume hoods and is designed to the same standards established on the medical center campus.
The open plan offers through visual connections from the offices, break areas, and laboratory spaces for observation and daylighting. Glass partitions provide physical barriers to contain the odors associated with a chemistry lab. Open ceilings with exposed infrastructure and overhead laboratory utilities complement the innovative and highly technical research performed in the lab and provide groundwork for future flexibility and modularity. New dedicated mechanical systems were designed to accommodate the technical equipment and to meet the advanced fire protection requirements of the lab facility.
