B+MD provided initial programming, planning, and schematic design to help Vanderbilt win an $8M NIH G20 grant. Subsequently, B+MD developed the project, which involved the design of a new flexible laboratory space, organized around an existing courtyard. The courtyard was refurbished unifying the two laboratory wings and workspace corridor. The interior, courtyard-facing facade incorporates custom-designed glazing to provide screened natural light across the corridors and into the labs.
Consolidating the modular laboratories and sharing resources among existing successful collaborations, the communal configuration promotes inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary collaboration to strengthen the research entity as a whole. The new laboratories accommodate a concentrated array of heavy robotics equipment, with an extremely high heat-load requiring robust HVAC systems adhering to NIH standards.
